Hundreds of volunteers join us in our ministry, helping to ease suffering in our region by providing direct service, advocating for justice, and in many other ways. Our volunteers are a diverse group. They are schoolchildren, college students and interns, parents volunteering with their children, retirees, skilled laborers, and business professionals. Volunteers bring tremendous talent and experience to our programs, giving more than 20,000 hours of time each year.

Here are some of the ways in which concerned Long Islanders give of their time. Perhaps one of these will match your interests, skills, and availability.

Immigration
Bilingual volunteers are needed to assist clients with resume writing, individual ESL coaching, translation of documents, and clerical assistance. Spanish, French/Creole, Arabic, and Persian speakers are sought.

Regina Maternity Services
Volunteers are needed to mentor and assist young, single moms who live independently. Mentors listen, support, and dialogue with participants to help them develop skills to meet the challenges of work and parenting.

Senior Community Service Centers
Volunteers assist seniors at day programs by serving lunch, providing companionship, organizing games and activities, and in other ways.

Youth Tutor
Tutors help young people living in our Teaching Family Homes. The young people in these residences need companionship, mentoring, and tutoring to meet the challenge of school.

Youth Mentors
Mentors are needed in our residential program for children. Mentors will work individually with one or two children on a long-term basis, providing a sympathetic and concerned ear, helping with homework, and assisting with recreational activities. A committment of one year is required.

Group Volunteering
Catholic Charities welcomes volunteers from high schools, youth ministry, confirmation groups, and the corporate world. Groups may assist with the following:

• Groups may visit our residences for the developmentally disabled a few times a month to share recreational activities and help plan special events with the residents.
  
  
• Groups may get together to help plan barbecues, dinners, or special outings for clients.
  
  
• They may help teach computer skills, join in with residents with musical or artistic talents or spend a quiet afternoon playing board games or reading.

Visually Impaired Program
Visually Impaired Program in Lynbrook is always in need of volunteer drivers to pick up clients and bring them to the center, then return them home at the end of the session. This program only operates on Thursdays. Drivers are welcome to stay and assist with recreational activities or help serve lunch.
