Catholic Charities of Long Island reflects the love of Jesus Christ for all God’s children and puts faith in action for those in need. In the Diocese of Rockville Centre these humanitarian efforts are conducted in accordance with all applicable laws and in a manner consistent with the dignity of each person. For Haitians currently on Long Island and at risk of losing Temporary Protected Status, such services encompass English language training and assistance complying with required public health screenings, as well as preparation for employment. Catholic Charities also provides orientation, trusted case assessment and legal representation before the Federal Court and Immigration Service for those who have valid grounds for lawful relief or can qualify for naturalization as US citizens.
In 2010, a devastating earthquake killed approximately 300,000 people in Haiti, which has since suffered additional natural disasters and ongoing civil unrest. Haitians and others who have been granted humanitarian parole and TPS have been part of the fabric of our communities and parishes for many years. To obtain humanitarian parole from USCIS (part of the Department of Homeland Security), individuals are vetted before arrival and must have a sponsor. Haitian nationals and Haitian-Americans are valued neighbors and important parts of the workforce, laboring in many sectors especially health and elder care.
The Catholic Church, Bishop Barres and the US Conference of Catholic Bishops have long advocated for comprehensive and common sense immigration reform to achieve the goals of security, justice and stability. While it is a Federal responsibility to regulate borders and commerce, it is the moral responsibility of those inspired by faith to act as Good Samaritans to improve conditions locally. Today, as so many struggle just to live and work in peace, we still believe in approaching complex challenges with faith, hope and love in the spirit of profound respect for every human being
