Corporal Works of Mercy: Shelter the Homeless

The holy season of Lent is a good time to consider the mission of Catholic Charities of Long Island in light of the seven Corporal Works of Mercy found in the teachings of Jesus:

Feed the hungry
Drink to the thirsty
Clothe the naked
Shelter the homeless
Visit the sick
Visit the imprisoned
Bury the dead

CCLI works to shelter the homeless through Project Independence and Project Veterans Independence. The programs help homeless individuals, military veterans and families coping with mental illness to live independently in appropriate housing within their communities and offer support and counseling.

Catholic Charities also helps to address the lack of affordable housing on Long Island by sponsoring 16 homes for low-income seniors, including one for frail seniors and another for those with physical disabilities. More than 100 developmentally disabled adults receive a dignified, supportive and activity-filled place to live in 12 CCLI group homes.

During Lent please join us in praying for current and future residents as well as the case managers, counselors, social service coordinators and direct support staff that care for them, so all may be filled with the hope of Christ.

Before Lent ends, we’ll spotlight another corporal work of mercy, Clothe the Naked, provided by Catholic Charities of Long Island.
